Magic Hour in Boston

Boston is a beautiful and historic city whose landscape is an urban photographer’s playground. I was lucky to get a number of shots for my portfolio out of this trip.

The selections here are unified by the unique light conditions of the Golden Hour, a brief portion of early evening where subjects are illuminated by the setting sun. The warm colors accentuate earth tones in Boston’s architecture and highlight them against the darkening sky. Combined with the city’s reflection in the Charles River, this series contains of some of my favorite photographic elements to capture.

Foggy Mornings in The City

I absolutely love shooting on foggy, overcast days. Mist and low clouds make the colors of a subject pop, providing naturally heightened contrast. And if I’m really lucky, a little sunlight pierces the gloom to bathe New York in gold.

Night Cityscapes Vol. 3

Who needs sleep? This is the third part of my New York at night series, and currently my favorite collection of shots from my favorite time of day to shoot. I selected these images to showcase a variety of architecture, weather conditions, and lighting all captured once the sun goes down. If you're also a fan of nighttime photography, check out Volume 1 and Volume 2 of this series, and rest assured that there will be more soon.

Crescent Moon in the City Vol. 2

It took me more than a year to put this series together. Shooting the moon in relation to the skyline requires patience- you have to wait until it's positioned where you want it in the sky, and then hope the weather cooperates. Any combination of clouds, fog or ambient light pollution can ruin the shot. Then you have to wait for the moon to return to the same place in the sky and keep your fingers crossed for better weather. But when it all works out, the results are magical. Take a look at the previous series.

The Winter of '21

It's been a while since New York has experienced as much winter weather as we've had this year. I made sure to get out with my camera before the plows did their work and the remaining snow turned that less-than-appealing salty gray.
Snow highlights the beauty of New York differently. People stand out in their surroundings more, allowing the city to frame them in places they'd otherwise be lost in the shuffle of everyday life. This may be the city that never sleeps, but it's always a treat to see nature slow it down.

Death Valley

Death Valley is a haven for photographers. Mountains, canyons, craters, sand, salt- if you can imagine a naturally occuring texture, chances are you'll find it here. Despite the area's austere reputation there is something extremely peaceful about being here. It's quiet. I wonder if the serenity is left over from thousands of years ago, when the places I photographed were at the bottom of a lake 600 feet deep.

Big Sur

Big Sur lived up to its name... the "Big" part, at least (what exactly is a Sur?). The Pacific Coast Highway winds for miles around massive cliffs, with the sea and sky stretching out endlessly around you. I was particularly impressed by the views at night. Seeing the Milky Way above the waves was absolutely magical.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most photogenic structures in the world for good reason. You can frame it against the surrounding mountains, or capture it rising into the fog which covers the area for most of the week. On a trip to California earlier this year I shot the bridge at every time of day, experimented with capturing the fog in black and white, and took the drone out for some spectacular aerial shots. My favorite image was captured at dawn when the waves were more intense, and I got the greatest color contrast between the bridge and the landscape around it.

Death Valley Landscape Patterns

Death Valley boasts a staggering number of diverse landscapes. Driving through it feels like visiting a different planet every few miles. Nothing compares to the experience of traveling through it in real-time, but my goal with this series was to capture some of the disparate natural patterns that somehow all exist in the same place.

Autumn from the Air

The colors of autumn bursting from the forests of upstate New York are impressive from the ground. I was curious to see them from the air and had a great time playing with the drone to get these shots. The compositions are alright- but I'm looking forward to exploring more next year and experimenting further.

Hazy Sun in The City

Wildfires covered the West Coast in September 2020. There was so much smoke in the sky that it got to the East Coast. I Have captured some photos with the sun in the frame, really rear for me but the sun looks insane.
